Amharic is an Ethiopian Semitic language. There are 21,811,600 total Amharic speakers, including an estimated 4,000,000 second-language speakers. Amharic is the second-most widely spoken language of Ethiopia (after Oromo) and the second-most spoken Semitic language (after Arabic). Amharic serves as the working language of Ethiopia.

It is spoken as a first language by the Amharas and as a dialect by other populations living in Ethiopia’s major cities and towns. Amharic is written left-to-right using a system that came out of the Geʽez script. The Amharic writing system is called fidal in Ethiopia, which means “script”, “alphabet,” “letter,” or “character.”
